Accessible Homes

In 2014, my late husband Jim and I purchased a home to renovate for our multi-generational family. Both in our late sixties, we were ready for our “forever home.” We planned to share this space with my now 98-year-old mother, Dot, and our son, Bryan, who had been living with ALS for over ten years. It was essential for me to create a safe, comfortable, and accessible environment for all of us.

We carefully selected a home that could accommodate our unique needs. This included an exterior elevator, a private bedroom and sitting room for my mother, and a suite with a roll-in shower for Bryan. These features, along with two home offices for Jim and me, made this home a perfect fit for our multi-generational family.

To enhance accessibility, we installed an elevator with entrances from both the living room and the lower-level family/theater room. This allows everyone to navigate the entire home easily. Each family member was an integral part of the renovation process, contributing ideas for how their spaces would be renovated to meet their needs and preferences.

As you tour this gallery, please note that the features that make our home safe, comfortable, and accessible are subtle.

A house can be all those things and still be a stunning masterpiece. I want to inspire clients to create a “forever home” for themselves and their families, where they can live well today….and tomorrow.
